Big Night

By Jeff Stimpson

Tonight I'll spend in the hospital with Alex.

I have never done this. Alex spent his first 13 months in hospitals, but I only spent one overnight with him, when he was six months old and Jill and I "nested" in the hospital to prove we could take care of a baby. That night was a wreck, and caring for Alex at home was later a lot easier since no nurses barged into our bedroom and hit the lights at 3 a.m. Oh -- and when Alex was incubated in the wee hours we stayed at the hospital until 4 a.m., then drove home and wished we were all dead. But that wasn't a full night, so I guess it doesn't count.
